When in Doubt, Fast Like Ezra

There’s this girl on TikTok who said something that stopped me in my tracks:

“Ezra would always fast before asking God for something.”

Now, I don’t know how I even got there—one minute I was watching someone bless their mac and cheese, the next, boom: conviction. My spirit froze. I went straight to the book of Ezra.
And yep—sis was telling the truth.

Fast Like Ezra, Don’t Fumble Like Us

In Ezra 8, the prophet is prepping for a massive journey. He’s leading a group of exiles from Babylon back to Jerusalem. We’re talking people, valuables, Temple treasure—the whole squad.

Now, if this were us? We’d be ringing up security. Armed guards. Backup. Anything to make sure no one hijacks our convoy. But Ezra?
Nah. He goes,

“I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us… because we had told the king, ‘The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to Him.’” (Ezra 8:22)

Imagine having that kind of faith pressure. He couldn’t backpedal and say, “JK, King. Send the horses.” He had already told the king his faith was in God. So what does he do?

“So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and He answered our prayer.” (Ezra 8:23)

Ezra didn’t guess his way through a spiritual decision. He didn’t default to “vibes.” He fasted. And God answered.

From Tarot to Truth

I won’t lie. There was a time I tried to get my answers the same way the world does. Tarot, horoscopes, energy readings—you name it.
I wasn’t trying to be rebellious. I just wanted answers. Peace. A sign.
But here’s the thing:

Counterfeit peace always comes with a price.

You think you’re just peeking behind the curtain, but you’re actually opening a spiritual invoice you can’t afford. That “guidance” often leads to confusion, dependency, and disconnection from God.

Meanwhile, Jesus is out here saying,

“Come to Me… and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
No fee. No middleman. No “energies.” Just grace and truth.

So now, when I’m unsure, I don’t pull a card or Google my rising sign.
I fast like Ezra.

Why Fasting Isn’t a Diet—It’s a Decision

Let’s set the record straight: fasting isn’t a hunger strike. You’re not trying to bribe God. This isn’t “holy blackmail.”

Fasting is a spiritual decision to quiet the noise.
It’s you saying, “God, I need to hear from You more than I need this plate.”

When you fast, your spirit turns up the volume while your flesh turns it down.
You get clear. Still. Sober-minded.
And the best part?

“Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” (Matthew 6:18)

Start small. One day. One meal. One intentional pause. But in that time, let your prayer be:

“God, I’m not eating right now because I need Your voice more than my next bite.”

That’s not weakness. That’s warfare.

Confidence Like Ezra

Ezra had the kind of confidence that said,
“We don’t need soldiers. We’ve got God.”
Why? Because he had already fasted. He had already heard from God.
He wasn’t moving on guesswork.
He was moving on God’s word.

When you fast like Ezra, you stop relying on your logic and start leaning on your Lord.

Final Thoughts: Close the Kitchen, Open Your Bible

So the next time you feel anxious, confused, or spiritually dry…
Don’t text a friend. Don’t check the stars.
Don’t even open your Notes app.

Instead:

  • Open your Bible.
  • Close your kitchen.
  • Fast like Ezra.

Because the God who came through for Ezra?
Still comes through today.
He’s just waiting for your hunger to match your need.
